Support Harlem River Park

It has taken much effort to build a wonderful, culturally and environmentally sensitive and sustainable waterfront park. Although the Harlem River Park Task Force is no longer active, we hope that it can serve as a model for continuing the efforts to create and maintain a community-driven stewardship program for the park.

On this page is some useful information about ongoing projects and enhancements to the park.

Partnerships For Parks

Partnerships for Parks, a joint program of NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and the City Parks Foundation, works to start, strengthen, and support neighborhood park groups; to link them together, so they can learn from each other and be stronger collectively; and to promote parks in general, so people will join in efforts to restore and preserve them. They provide workshops, small grants, organizational development, and problem solving to support local efforts to revitalize parks and the neighborhoods that surround them.
Some park enhancements can include:
  • Replacing chain link and razor wire fencing with decorative fencing under the MTA Metro North Bridge, surrounding the electrical substation.
  • Providing artistic lighting and repainting the underside of all bridges spanning the park to highlight its park location.
  • Building additional access points from Harlem River Bridges to Harlem River Park: a ramp from the 138th Street Bridge to the 139th Street pedestrian access ramp, a ramp or staircase from the 145th Street Bridge walkway to Harlem River Park.
  • Replacement of the copper piping and valves for the onsite water system.
  • Installation of waterfront edge seating similar to South Street Seaport waterfront and Stuyvesent Cove.
  • Additional chess tables and seating.
  • Swing set/playground.
  • Dog run.
